| | | | Creator: | WELCOME | | | | Dates: | 1978-1982 | | | | Abstract: | WELCOME (Westsiders and Eastsiders Let's Come Together) was founded in 1978 in Cleveland, Ohio, by teachers, parents, and concerned citizens to create an atmosphere of peace and racial cooperation in response to the possibility of violence during the desegregation of the Cleveland Public Schools. WELCOME activities, which involved community centers and churches, included a series of bridgewalks across the Detroit Superior Bridge, the distribution of tee-shirts, the establishment of WELCOME committees at each school, and WELCOME wagons that visited neighborhoods. Once desegregation took place, WELCOME clubs were formed in the newly desegregated schools. The most active students in each club formed the citywide WELCOME Leadership Institute in 1980, funded by the Cleveland and Gund Foundations. In 1984, funding ended, and the Leadership Institute evolved into Youth United to Oppose Apartheid. WELCOME and the Leadership Institute ceased to exist. | | | | Creator: | Van Oeyen, Louis | | | | Dates: | 1895-1945 | | | | Abstract: | Louis Van Oeyen (1865-1946) was the first photographer hired as staff on a Cleveland, Ohio, newspaper, and a pioneer in many techniques and activities of photojournalism. Van Oeyen was hired as a Cleveland Press photographer in 1901, after his photographs of the water intake explosion disaster in Lake Erie, and the assassination of President William McKinley, were published in the Press. During his career at the Press, he shot portraiture, politics, disaster, crime, scandal, and sports photographs. His greatest love was baseball, and he became official photographer for the American League in 1908, and for the World Series until 1922. Van Oeyen also helped test new photographic equipment, most notably the General Electric flash bulb in 1938. He assisted other photographers at the beginning of their careers, including Margaret Bourke-White and Herman Seid. Van Oeyen died in 1946. The collection consists of photographs and negatives taken by photographer Louis Van Oeyen before and during his career as a Cleveland Press photographer. A large portion of the collection depicts sports, particularly baseball. Other subjects include technological innovation, politics, entertainment, automobiles, aviation, horse racing, and boxing. There are extensive series of images from the Ormond Beach, Florida, auto races; the National Air Races held in Cleveland, Ohio; famous aviators; dirigibles; and ship launchings. Political coverage includes international, national and local figures, among them several presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Roosevelt, and the coronation of King George VI of Great Britain. Celebrity portraits range from industrialists, including J. P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller, to entertainers, such as Buster Keaton and Yehudi Menuhin. Smaller bodies of subject material include photographs of crime, disaster, legal proceedings, and story art for fictional serial stories published by the newspaper. Crime illustration includes portraits of Cassie Chadwick. Disasters include the Collinwood School and Cleveland Clinic fires; floods; and aviation, automotive, and railroad wrecks. Legal coverage includes an extensive series on the John T. Scopes "Monkey Trial," including candid portraits of Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan. | | | | Creator: | Ohio Citizen Action | | | | Dates: | 1957-1986 | | | | Abstract: | Ohio Citizen Action (f. 1975), is a statewide environmental organization known for its successful canvass-based tactics. It also has worked on campaign finance reform and consumer rights issues. Founded in 1975 as the Ohio Public Interest Campaign (OPIC), it was initially a coalition of union, senior citizen, church, and community groups that worked on issues such as job loss and economic problems stemming from plant closings, community reinvestment, tax abatement,and financial issues, among others. It became part of Citizen Action, a national coalition of consumer and public action groups from several states, in 1980. Citizen Action at its founding was composed of the Connecticut Citizen Action Group, Illinois Public Action Council, Massachusetts Fair Share, Ohio Public Interest Campaign, and Oregon Fair Share, and had a central office located in Cleveland. It eventually grew to have affiliates in 34 states. However, the national group had some political disagreements and several state affiliates separated from it, including the Ohio group which became Ohio Citizen Action in 1989. The national group eventually disbanded, but Ohio Citizen Action is very active currently, focusing much of its efforts on what it calls "good neighbor campaigns" since the late 1990s. "Good neighbor campaigns" use the strengths of community organizing combined with canvassing and other techniques to stop polluting at major industries. Ohio Citizen Action has had various successes addressing a wide range of issues. As OPIC, it began fighting for advance notification of plant closings shortly after its founding. This became a nationwide campaign that resulted in federal legislation that became law in 1989. It was sponsored by Senator Howard Metzenbaum (D-OH) who championed workers' and consumers' rights. Due to his tenacity in working on such issues, Ohio Citizen Action honored him after his retirement by establishing the Ohio Citizen Action Howard M. Metzenbaum Award in 1995, awarded to individuals who exemplify Metzenbaum's tenacity in fighting for issues that Ohio Citizen Action and Senator Metzenbaum would support. Ohio Citizen Action (as OPIC) also worked on stopping downtown tax abatements in the city of Cleveland and was involved in the debate over the sale of Muny Light. In 1983 it won an anti-trust suit against three northeast Ohio grocery chains for price fixing that resulted in a $20 million dollar award going to one million Cleveland, Akron, and Lorain area households. This was the largest consumer anti-trust settlement in United States history. It also led a movement to pass toxic substance right-to- know legislation in Cleveland and other cities, which became a model for federal right-to-know laws and the Toxic Release Inventory in 1986. As OPIC transitioned into an organization with dues paying members, it changed its name to Ohio Citizen Action in 1989 and began to focus more on the "good neighbor campaigns" described above. It also became more active in the movement for campaign finance reform supporting the successful initiative for term limits for state legislators and winning the campaign for electronic reporting of campaign contributions in Ohio. Ohio Citizen Action, both non-profit and non-partisan, was in 2012 still an active organization with 80,000 members statewide. It continued to train young activists and promote its causes through door-to-door and phone canvassing. It focused on environmental and public health issues as well as money in politics and consumer issues. Since 1995 the group presents the Ohio Citizen Action Howard M. Metzenbaum Award, mentioned above, each year to an Ohioan that exhibits Senator Metzenbaum's "principled tenacity". It affiliated with the Ohio National Guard in 1877, formed part of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in 1898, was absorbed into the 135th Field Artillery in 1918, and reorganized in 1920 as Troop A of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. It became part of the 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1947. The Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery was also founded in 1877 to quell labor violence. It disbanded by 1905. The collection consists of photographs of Troop A, of Cleveland, Ohio, and the 135th Field Artillery. One album contains photographs of Troop A training in August 1912 at Novelty, Ohio. Another album depicts members of Troop A patrolling the Mexican border during 1916 and of the 135th Field Artillery during World War I. Loose photographs contain group portraits and other images which chronicle the 135th Field Artillery during World War I. In 1972, Moresky joined the Cleveland, Ohio NOW. By 1973 she was a member of the executive board and a state delegate, and, in 1974, Moresky became state NOW coordinator. In 1976 she was elected to a seat on the NOW national board. Moresky remained involved in NOW, particularly at the local level, throughout the 1980s, even as her political and women's rights activities increased and diversified. Her involvement included: Ohio Attorney General's Task Force on Sexism in Education, Cuyahoga County Democratic Executive Committee, Twenty-Second District Caucus chairperson, Democratic National Convention delegate, and Cleveland board member of Americans for Democratic Action. The collection includes personal files, consisting of resumes, calendars, correspondence, speeches and files re: fundraising and public relations; NOW files, consisting of local chapter files, Ohio NOW files, national NOW files, NOW ERA campaign files (hearings, press clippings and state campaign notebooks), and NOW publications; and, files pertaining to general women's issues, and events and organizations (such as abortion, day care, education, employment, International Women's Year, the Twenty-Second District Caucus, the Democratic National Conventions of 1980 and 1984). Hanna Company and owned several railroads and electric streetcar lines. Active in Republican politics, Hanna was instrumental in presidential campaigns of William McKinley. His photographs were frequently published in The Call and Post. It was organized in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914 by Frederick J. Goff and the Board of Directors of the Cleveland Trust Company. It has provided funds for educational and artistic development and for humanitarian purposes such as housing and aid to children and the handicapped. The collection consists of grant files, both accepted and declined, which include agreements, award letters, brochures, budgets, correspondence, evaluations, financial statements, forms, memoranda, newsletters, notes, press releases, programs, proposals, and reports. All photographs and audio/visual media have been retained in their respective grant files. The Cleveland Foundation Assistance to Other Foundations series contains much the same document types as the grant files. Other document types contained in the collection include annual reports, articles, budgets, correspondence, declaration of trusts, forms, indexes, lists, memoranda, minutes, newsletters, notes, and reports. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. Its facilities were moved to Carnegie Avenue in 1908, and to its present site on Shaker Boulevard in 1927. After a brief merger with MetroHealth Medical Center in the early 1990s, it was sold to Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation and its Ohio partner, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine in 1997. The non-profit proceeds of the sale were used to create the Saint Luke's Foundation. The hospital is currently owned by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine Health System and the University Hospitals Health System. | | | | Creator: | Acme-Cleveland Corporation | | | | Dates: | 1825-1996 | | | | Abstract: | The Acme-Cleveland Corporation was formed In Cleveland, Ohio, by the merger in 1968 of Cleveland Twist Drill Company, a manufacturer of high-speed drills and metal cutting tools, and the National Acme Company, a manufacturer of automatic multiple-spindle lathes and screw machines. Cleveland Twist Drill was founded in 1876 by Jacob D. Cox II, son of a Civil War general and former governor of Ohio, and Francis F. Prentiss. The company became a leader in the manufacture of superior-grade high-speed twist drills. By 1936 it was the world's largest maker of high-speed drills and reamers, flourishing under Jacob D. Cox, Jr., who pioneered profit-sharing and authored two books on wage theory. National Acme originated in Hartford, Connecticut, as the Acme Screw Machine Company in 1895, makers of the first commercially successful automatic multiple-spindle screw manufacturing machine. Acme Screw merged with National Manufacturing Co. in 1901 to become National Acme Manufacturing Company, which purchased the Windsor Machine Company to become National Acme Company in 1916. The collection consists of financial reports, ledgers, shareholder meetings, company newsletters, marketing material, and correspondence, particularly those of Francis F. Prentiss, who was president of Cleveland Twist Drill between 1904 and 1911.
